WHO IS WHO?
Louis Pasteur is a world famous French chemist. He invented the process of Pasteurization and developed vaccines for several diseases including rabies. By the time of his death in 1895, he had become a national hero and had been honored in many ways. He was given a state funeral at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. There are Pasteur institutes in some cities in Viet Nam where people can come to receive different kinds of vaccinations.
Ton That Tung was a pioneer in liver surgery. He was also the father of a new technique named after him for operating on thr liver. “Ton That Tung method” enables a liver operation to be completed in four to eight minutes instead of three to six hours as before.
Nelson Mandela, an antiapartheid activist, helped form the Youth League of the African National Congress (ANC), which led peaceful mass protests against apartheid. He also addressed the Conference of the Pan-African Freedom Movement of East and Central Africa, and this was warmly received by senior political leaders in several countries. In 1964, he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment but was released in 1990. Three years later he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with F.W. de Klerk. Their combined efforts ended apartheid and brought about a peaceful transition to nonracial democracy in South Africa. In 1994, Mandela became the first black president of South Africa. Five years later, he retired from presidency at the age of 81.
