Unit 5: Illiteracy
Part B: SPEAKING
WARM-UP: BRAINSTORMING
State the reasons of illiteracy:
Many children live far from school.
Their families are too poor to send them to school.
Lack of schools and teachers in remote or mountainous areas.
Students cannot buy all the required books.
What are your suggested solutions to these problems?
To solve these problems I think we should:
Build more schools.
Provide poor children with transportation, books, money …
Send teachers to remote areas.
TASK 1: WORK IN PAIRS. Match each problem in A with its appropriate solutions in B
TASK 2: WORK IN GROUPS. Talk about your school problems and offer solutions. Use the suggestions in Task 1.
Example: A:- Many students cannot buy all the required books. What do you think we should do to help them?
B:- I think we should ask the school head-master to provide free textbooks for students from low-income families.
C:- We should collect used textbooks for school libraries.
TASK 3: WORK IN GROUPS. Think of three or four problems your class is coping with. Talk about them and offer the solutions. You may use the cues below:
Large class size (Over 50 students in the class)
Shortage of desks (3 students per desk)
Hot in summer (no electric fans)
Cold and dark in winter (broken windows, no lights)
SUGGESTED CONVERSATION
A:- The main problem of our class is that it is oversized. There are over 50 students in our class. What should we do to solve this problem?
B:- I think an ideal class size is 20-30 Ss , so the school should recruit more teachers and open new classes.
A:- Another problem is that there is a shortage of desks. Three students have to sit on a desk. What should we do?
B:- We should buy more desks or if there are new classes , the current number of desk should be provided adequately.
HOMEWORK
Write a paragraph about a school problem and one or two solutions to it.
Do exercises in the workbook.
Prepare for the next lesson: Unit 5 – Listening.
THANK YOU FOR ATTENTION
Good Bye
